2-4 October 2026

Yes, The Netherlands is a very flat country. But not everywhere! That’s why we are going to Limburg, in the south of The Netherlands, where it is hilly, quiet and very beautiful! In three days, we will walk the larger part of Het Krijtlandpad, from Slenaken to Valkenburg or Maastricht. The hike includes the highest point of The Netherlands, at an altitude of 322m above sea level. Please note – this Adventure Hike is for experienced hikers only!
Limburg Adventure Hike
Have you always wanted to visit Limburg? Then this is your chance! The south of Limburg is perfect for some serious hiking and will be beautiful in October. We will stay at the Stayokay hostel in Maastricht, a city worth exploring. From Maastricht, the start and end points of the hikes can easily be reached by public transport. We will stay in Maastricht for three nights, with arrival on Thursday and departure on Sunday. The hiking adventure starts on Friday morning and ends on Sunday afternoon. I am looking forward to hiking the hills of Limburg with you!
Thursday Oct 1 – Arrival and accomodation
For an early departure on Friday (we will leave the hostel around 9am) it is recommended to arrive the night before, on Thursday. I have booked a number of rooms at the Stayokay hostel in Maastricht. I will be there to welcome you! Please indicate on the registration form which room you prefer. You may also book your own accomodation, in Maastricht or elsewhere.
Friday Oct 2 – Slenaken to Vaals (22 km)

The Adventure Hike starts on Friday, in Slenaken. The trail covers 22km over hilly terrain with beautiful views. It partly overlaps with the famous Dutch Mountain Trail. We will climb the highest ‘mountain’ of The Netherlands, the Vaalserberg, and visit the place where three countries meet: Germany, Belgium and The Netherlands, so you can check that off your bucketlist as well! The hike ends in Vaals, from where we will travel back to Maastricht. Dinner will be served in the hostel.
Saturday Oct 3 – Vaals to Gulpen (18 km)

Today’s hike brings us from Vaals to Gulpen, a beautiful place and the source of Gulpener beer. The highest point of the trail will be the Gulpenerberg, at 157m above sea level. Again, we will follow parts of the Dutch Mountain Trail as well. A cold beer or a piece of vlaai (the traditional pie from Limburg) will taste really good after this challenging hike!
Sunday Oct 4 – Gulpen to Maastricht* (23 km)

On the last day of the Adventure Hike we will walk from Gulpen back to Maastricht. Alternatively, you could end the hike in Valkenburg and take some time to explore this popular tourist destination. A train runs between Valkenburg and Maastricht four times an hour. If you want to get the most kilometers (or steps) out of this hike, it is worth walking all the way to Maastricht and get the full Adventure Hike experience. The hike then ends at Maastricht train station.
*Or to Valkenburg only and take a train to Maastricht from there.
How to prepare for the adventure hike
To make sure everything goes smoothly, follow the steps below if you want to join the Limburg Adventure Hike.
1. Register
The first step is to register for the hike on this website. You can do that here. Once I have received your registration, I will send you the invoice for the cost of the hike and your accomodation. The participation fee for this adventure hike is €45 (10% off for members). Your spot on the adventure hike is secured as soon as I have received your payment (you may also pay in installments). After that, you may still cancel up to 1 month before the hike and get a full refund (i.e. until Sept 1st, 2026). After that date, a refund is only possible if there is someone to take your spot.
2. Your accomodation in Maastricht
We will stay at the Stayokay hostel in Maastricht, beautifully located next to the river Maas. After each day of hiking, we will return to the hostel for dinner and a good rest.
The following options are available at the hostel (all bookings include breakfast, towels, bed linen and tourist tax).
- Bunk bed in a shared room for 6 (male only): €201,84 for three nights (6/6 available)
- Bunk bed in a shared room for 4 (female only): €201,84 for three nights (2/2 available)
- Comfort bed in a shared room for 4 (female only): €276,34 for three nights (2/2 available)
- Comfort bed in a room for 2 (female or couples only): €296,84 for three nights
You can add a lunch bag (€10/day) and/or dinner (€19/day) to you booking later.
Alternatively, you may book your own accommodation, either at the Stayokay hostel or somewhere else. You can indicate this on the registration form.
4. Get ready for the adventure
To be able to enjoy this hike without any problems, you need to be an experienced hiker, as the hikes are long and the terrain can be challenging at times. We will be hiking 6-7 hours every day (including breaks). You will only be accepted on the Limburg Adventure Hike if you have joined one or more Dutch Nature Hikes before and have been able to finish them without any problems.
5. What to bring
Well, no need to start packing right now, but just make sure you have the right gear. You will need at least the following items:
- A good backpack
- Hiking gear: good shoes, several layers of clothing (depending on the weather), a rain coat, sun protection, etc.
- Sufficient water (at least 1.5 liters), a CamelBak (or similar) is ideal for regular drinking
- Snacks
If you have any questions about what to bring or how to prepare for this adventure hike, you can always contact me!
I am super excited to go on this trip with you, and I am looking forward to receiving your registration!
